Early Morning Birds in the Klein Karoo
Dreaming about early morning birdies flitting around, loudly proclaiming territories and celebrating life - hot summer days in the semi arid regions of South Africa... No better way to remember them by other than catching their spirits on paper.
150mm x 210mm - 285gsm Fabriano - India Ink, Derwent Inktense and Uni-pin Markers.
Klipspring'Protea
A2 - Watercolour, Acrylics
and Pen
on 300gsm Aquafine paper.
Klipspringers bound across the rocky faces of the Sandstone cliffs in the Karoo Landscape. high up on these faces they stand proud amongst the proteas, guarding the world they know.
A spectacular, breathtaking sight... in a barren and harsh landscape.

Cheetah
A5 - Indian Ink
on
300gsm Aquafine paper
I raised my first Cheetah in 1998. He was an orphaned, captive bred handsome little 14 week old mischievious fluffball.
Duma litterally spent 24 hours A day with me, until he was 3 years old.
I remember daily siesta's in the sweltering heat of the karoo, napping under an Acacia Karoo with him. he would disappear... and come back with another guineafowl. he ALWAYS tried to feed me his leftover scraps.
When I started guiding I had an advantage on the other guides. I could read the behaviour of a cheetah very well, and it was a treasure to be able to spend time on foot with wild Cheetahs on many of the reserves we worked at over the years.

The Right Whale
A3 - Acrylics, Moulding
Paste and Pens on
200gsm Amedeo paper.
Each year, between May and December, Southern Right Whales return from the Subantarctic to feed, calve & mate in the coastal waters of the Western Cape of South Africa.
Sighting them along the Hermanus coastline inspired this painting, and the first time I used moulding paste with Acrylics.
After the Feed
A3 - Watercolour & Indian
Ink on 300gsm Aquafine.
White Lions in an arid landscape stand out like a sore thumb. but they are an amazing sight.
This lioness was the first free roaming white lion to give birth on Sanbona Wildife Reserve in the Western Cape.

The Old Man
A4 - Indian Ink
on 300gsm Aquafine DR.
Buffalo are notorious
for their bad tempers.
They are also ever vigilant, nothing slips by unnoticed.
One of the most terrifying moments in any guides life is when they come face to face with an old Dugga Boy on foot - the stare is enough to unnerve you right back where you came from...

Impala'Lily
A3 - Indian Ink and Watercolour
on 300gsm Aquafine paper
As one of South Africa's most common antelope species, the Impala is well known amongst nature lovers.
I have always toyed with the idea of doing a series of paintings of all of the antelope in South Africa and tying in their habitat by incorporating a flower from their distribution range.
This was the first painting in this series, an experiment of sorts, and I am very happy with the result - Impala Lilies are such gorgeous flowers.

Karoo Dusk
A4 - Oil on 180gsm card
Springbuck are the national antelope of South Africa. Seeing them in an arid karoo environment with a very vivid sunset or sunrise is one of the most spectacular sights one can experience.
Young rams play fight with each other to learn how to fight for their territories at a later stage in their lives.

Crimson'Crocuta
A2 - Indian Ink and Acrylics on
300gsm Aquafine paper
Some of my fondest memories in the Kruger National Park are of Hyenas. They are the true Kings of the African Bush.
I remember watching old matriarchs scolding young boisterous pups when they become too rough, or wander too far away from the den. Realizing that there are so many similarities bewteen us and them.
at night they show their full character. Their Blood curdling calls send chills down your spine. It makes you feel vulnerable in the safety of your chalet.
When I saw Albie Venter's photograph of this animal in its carnal element, I knew I had to paint it. It is a true reflection of life in the African Wilderness.

On Edge
A5 - Indian Ink
on 300gsm Amedeo
Rhinos have been receiving a lot of publicity with the current poaching problems we are having in Africa and the world.
These two White Rhino still enjoyed their freedom, in the wild, but with 24 hour protection against poachers.

Contemplate
A5 - Indian Ink and Watercolour
on 200gsm Amedeo
We do not take time to contemplate the normal everyday things we take for granted. The spectacular dedication of a mere sparrow to life and a mate has become a nuisance in the form of sound and cleanliness.

Interest
A3 - Charcoal
on 180gsm Paper
I find charcoal very daunting, but there are endless possibilities in texture and depth.
This is also true with Lions, they are a very dynamic species. soft when it comes to handling their offspring, gentle and harsh at the same time and very unforgiving when it comes to their own survival.

The Kite
A4 - Derwent Pastell
Pencils on 180gsm paper
I always loved working on black paper, it seems a lot more forgiving than white paper will ever be.
It lends itself out to 3 dimensional drawing much more than I have experienced on any other surface.
Raptors are captivating. Their mastery over the wind, their ever knowing and observing gaze and their razor sharp accuracy when decending onto unwary prey resembles everything I have ever strived towards in my life.
I have yet to master any of the above...
